Vision & Mission Statement

History beckons, St. Xavier’s College is a hundred and sixty one years young. St. Xavier’s is a metaphor for commitment, care and service, and this momentous hour of the history of our college makes us, the Xaverians articulate our pledge for posterity, our ‘vision’ of the ‘mission’ of St. Xavier’s College, our ambition and aspiration for future. We are proud of the progress of St. Xavier’s College of today – a precious seed has prospered into a vital, virtuous tree. The college has evolved into a nationally ranked, multifaceted and co-educational institution.

As enunciated in its Mission Statement, St. Xavier’s has, during the days of its journey welcomed those of all beliefs and traditions, and has respected and valued ‘the diversity which their membership brings to the College Community.’ Accommodation of such diversity has always been the abiding attribute of any Jesuit enterprise. Founded under the auspices of a particular religious denomination, we, today, find ourselves completely secular in character. We are determined to preserve this identity. We firmly believe that the distinctive Catholic and Jesuit character of the College, both in tradition and spirit is integral to our identity. We believe that St. Xavier’s College can remain faithful to its heritage and extend its intent to meet the intellectual and spiritual challenges of the contemporary and future academic world.

Working conscientiously and creatively, we shall forge a vision of what St. Xavier’s can be as a Catholic and Jesuit College for the twenty-first century. The following version of our Vision Statement crystallizes our critical self-understanding of the Mission of St. Xavier’s College. We are certain that it will further the prospects for an ongoing dialogue with our peers as we discover anew the Catholic and Jesuit dimensions of the future of the College. Rooted in the life, love and teachings of Jesus Christ and inspired by the Ignatian Vision of forming men and women for others, St. Xavier’s continues to strive:

Our Vision

To promote a society based on love, freedom, liberty, justice, equality and fraternity.

A Brief History of the College

CREST OF SXC

The Crest of St. Xavier’s College is modeled on Jassu Crest of the College Patron Saint Francis Xavier’s family. It has been adapted to local surroundings, suggestive of a native flavour of a College in India. The escutcheon in white and blue contains a tiger and a palm tree, overlooked by a silver crescent moon, which symbolizes the palacio of Xavier. The charge on the Dexter, HIS, bespeaks a College of the Society of Jesus (Iesus Hominum Salvator – Jesus, Savior of Human Family). The checky argent and sable in the base recall the spirit of the Xaverian family. A garter bearing the words “St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta”, encircles the escutcheon and it is surmounted by a Cross emanating holy rays. A scroll passes underneath inscribed with the words Nihil Ultra (Nothing Beyond), the motto of the College. The Crest signifies dignity, courage, quiet gleam and the call of the beyond – the quest persists towards higher endeavour.
